Paul Tornquist has been Head Pro at WVTC since 2012. Paul has 25 years of coaching experience at various locations including the North Shore Winter Club, the Tennis Academy in Delray Beach, Florida, the Vancouver Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club and the Peter Burwash International Tennis Management Company. He served as Tennis Director at private clubs and resorts in Singapore, the West Indies, the British Virgin Islands, New York and Florida, the Trivandrum Tennis Club in India and the Martin Verkerk Tennis & Events in Holland. Paul has competed in the ITF Satellite Tournaments in Europe. He is also a certified yoga instructor. Most importantly, Paul has a passion and enthusiasm for the game of tennis which he shares with every player he coaches and every organization he has been involved with.
High Performance Coach
Alejandro Marin started coaching in 2001 and holds a Tennis Canada Pro Level 2 coaching certificate. As a junior, he played competitively in Colombia, his home country and in Vancouver’s lower mainland. Early in his career he became the after-school programs director for Tennis BC before coaching at the North Vancouver Tennis Centre (formerly Grant Connell Tennis Centre). For 8 years he was the high-performance director at the North Shore Winter Club where he developed junior players and adults of all levels. A number of his students went on to compete at the national and international level, including Filip Peliwo, 2012’s World #1 Junior and a top 300 on the ATP Tour rankings. Alejandro is patient and understanding while at the same time demonstrates his enthusiasm and love for the game of tennis.
High Performance Coach
Dennis Simsek is a Vancouver local and has been coaching since 1999. Prior to that, he had a very successful junior tennis career. He played on the Canadian U14 NTT Cup team, had two final appearances in the singles Junior National Championships and won the Junior National Doubles Title in Canada. He beat the former #1 ATP in the world, Juan Carlos Ferrero at the Junior Orange Bowl Championships in Florida. Dennis competed against players like Fernando Gonzalez, Xavier Malisse and Tommy Haas during his junior playing career. In 2007, Dennis was called to the Men’s Turkish Davis Cup team. In 2012 he achieved an ATP world ranking and in 2013 ranked #14 in the Mens Canadian Open.
Dennis’ coaching career began in 1999 at the Grant Connell Tennis Centre. He was very active with progressive tennis for youngsters, junior recreational tennis, high performance groups as well as adult groups. For 2 years he was Head Pro at the Bollate Tennis Club in Milan, Italy. In 2002, Dennis came back to Canada to join The Tennis Academy in Calgary as an Assistant Pro where he helped lead the High Performance Juniors for 2 years. He remained at the Academy for the next 10 years as Senior Pro with occasional summer coaching positions in Bali, Singapore and California. During that time, he represented Tennis Alberta as a provincial coach and led the Junior Provincial U16 team to the National Championships in Quebec.
Dennis is a Tennis Canada Certified Pro Level 1.
Kinuko Higashio joined the WVTC coaching staff in 2004. She grew up in Osaka, Japan and started playing tennis at age 10. Her father was a player and he thought she could do well because she was tall. She continued playing through university and competed in the top league in Japan. At age 40, after coaching in Japan and then Vancouver, Kinuko started competing again. She holds 3 Canadian National Titles including #2 in the 40’s and #1 in the 45’s. She was chosen to play for the Canadian World Team 7 times and competed in England, Germany, Austria, Uruguay, and Turkey. She was also invited to become a member of the International Lawn Tennis Club which allowed her to play at Wimbledon, Monte Carlo and Roland Garros. Kinuko is eager to share her experiences with all her students and help them improve their own game. Kinuko is a Tennis Canada Certified Pro Level 1.
